Giving Offline Business An Online Presence
Do you own or operate a small business? Do you have a website tied into that business? And finally, do you get any business from that website?
That last question can be a killer to many small business owners who have paid huge dollars for an online presence only to realise that the prettiest website ever posted on the internet is next to useless unless prospective clients can actually find it.
I understand that small business owners in Melbourne, or Australia wide for that matter, have not got the time or inclination to absorb themselves in the mechanics of having an online presence. They have more than enough on their plate with the day to day running of the business.
For the uninitiated I will outline the whole purpose here. Bear with me if this is common knowledge to you. For many small business owners it isn’t and my intent here is to hopefully open the eyes of these guys.
Firstly a fact. Did you know that over 70% of people looking for goods or services initiate that search on the internet and that over 90% of these people then go to a brick and mortar business to purchase?
That is a massive amount of people looking for what you have to offer. You really are leaving money on the table without an online presence. But I said earlier, you can have the best website going around but without being seen it is useless.
So how do we get the site seen buy potential clients? Through what is called Search Engine Optimisation or SEO for short. But first we will go through the sequence of events that happens in a typical search.
Let’s say you own a fencing business that specialises in building paling fencing in Melbourne. A client will go to a search engine and type in the words “paling fencing” and a series of results shows up on the page.
What happens when you search for this term is that the search engine will search it’s own database and show you the results it thinks is relevant to your search. but how does the search engine determine what pages to put up on the first page?
It constantly scours websites to find out what content is on web pages and stores this data. It can then show those results. If your web page provides relevant information about paling fencing, the search engine will show your website first.
Basic SEO is the act of providing relevant information about the terms that you want your site to be found for. This can be time consuming but obviously very rewarding if you start getting a huge amount of visitors to your site.
Further articles here will dig deeper into this procedure.
